Sadly as per: the volume on my mic is terrible and I do apologise :)

Just a small tutorial of some sort to how a vector or a vexel is constructed and the idea of layering shapes.

A lot of times I've seen comments on daily deviations, my own and friends vectors/vexels stating they have just ran an image through a filter or they have just posterized something and presented that as the final piece.

This is to educate to show you how simple shapes are layered to produce a final image.

Image in the video is Faint which the colours do look different as it doesn't have the last layer of blue on top to alter the colours of the final piece.

All vector done in Illustrator CS4.

I hope this helps clear things up and educate people to exactly how much time and effort goes into producing a vector or a vexel. :)

@07:50This is awesome! I also use changing opacity of the layers while doing my vexels. I use Photoshop and I will start working on Illustrator and have no idea about how it works so I'm checking all your tutorials on Illustrator (you've been a huge inspiration for my vexels on Photoshop) and hopefully I'll understand how that program works (it scares me!). I actually want to use Illustrator for the gradient mesh... BTW, I love your accent!!

@07:50The pen tool in Illustrator is a lot easier to use and much more flexible than the one in photoshop in my opinion. I was really intimidated by AI when I first got it, but once you get into the swing of things, you will see the benefits of it compared to PS :)

Good luck

@07:50So to build up the shadows you use the same color but at a different opacity for the whole piece?
Is that what you often do for other work, or was that just the method you used for this particular piece? :)

@07:50Yeah thats what I do - build up shading with one colour and then use another then keep doing that :)

I do that with 95% of my vectors/vexels :)

@07:51Wow, this is awesome!

How do you usually start your project? Sketch it out in photoshop first? Or just use a picture as a reference?

@07:51Usually I use a reference image - although I'm trying to get away from that method and do reference free stuff :)

@01:08I know you have critique discouraged, but I thought I might suggest that you pull your mic away a bit. You get static whenever you speak. Awesome of you to make a video tutorial though!

@01:08Have you tried Mic Boost in the Recording parameters? Do you use a Mac or a PC? If you use PC, right click on your Sound Mixer (looks like a little speaker.) When the Mic you're using shows up, right click on it, and then the Levels tab. Depending on your operating system (XP and Vista are the only ones I know, sorry,) you'll either see a box or a slider for Microphone boost. Make sure the box is checked, or move the slider up, which ever you need to do, and that should help.

This helped a lot! After completing my first vector image- well a long time ago (I got a lot of help from all your tutorials!)- this just makes me want to go try new things!

I really want to vector again, but I don't have the time. I really like the lowered opacity layer effect, as I would create layer over layer with colours slightly varying.

Thanks so much! This really helped me! (well- will help me when I'm done with exams!)

You are a HUGE source of inspiration to me :D

Why not try doing a little bit at a time... who says you have to finish a vector in one sitting? You might find it easier to do a couple of shapes per day and see how the final piece looks :)

Thank you for such a wonderful compliment  as always, if you need any help, I'm always here :D

I will continue vectoring right after my exams- in around 1 to 2 months.
I can't wait! :D

Out of curiosity- are you a hobby illustrator, or do you do it for a living?

Oh my - don't say things like that, I don't see anyone as being a fan of my stuff, but I guess curious to what my next is? You're very nice to say such things, but I really don't see it like that at all.

I'm very passionate about vexels and vectors and if I can get to help people then I have all the time in the world for people :)
