After yet another occurance in the vexel definition debate, it left me so angry and frustrated I was sick. I felt knots in my stomach and just felt all giddy.

So I'm letting go... which will be great news to the powers that be... as they wont have me noting them and correcting their errors.

Truth be told, over the past couple of years or so, I have strongly disagreed with the redefinition of the term "vexel"...

Back in the day when we were naive digital artists making graphics for our website layouts of our personal websites... we would create raster images which mimic'd vector art. We were none the wiser... we thought it was vector. Until we were corrected by some, including the person who coined the term Seth Woolley.

I say we, this includes old skool vexellers such as *Sewwy and not the powers that be. The first being two new additions to the vexel community lets say. Who were not there at the words conception. Who are only educated in the new definition, the incorrect definition.

The whole word is modelled around 2 things... pixel and vector... this is how the word was formed. It was not the mixture of both raster elements and vector work... it was not the work of vector with a texture on. It was basically using the pen tool or lasso/fill tool to produce raster (pixel) layers which looked like vector art.

You have to ask yourself a couple of things...

Why would a word be coined for an art form which already exists? (ie vexel is not vector, why reclass a vector?)
Why would myself and others put so much of our time and effort into changing the definition back to the original?

Why did we go about wanting it to change to the original definition? Well because it's a memory, it's something to be proud of... being there at the conception of such a word, such a digital art form. To have it changed, it feels like it's not associated with our past, with our beginnings into digital art.

It's funny, before some people became a GM, they were vocal in supporting such a cause to get the definition back. Oh how times have changed.

Why am I posting this? I have to let it all out. We've went through the official routes of noting and even e-mailing $Moonbeam13 when we weren't getting responses from some people. Yes not all notes and queries were answered. Some people decided to nit pick at the finer details, the irrelevant details and not face the major issue in order to respond to the battle cry in their favour. After being assured that some day we'd talk about the redefinition... some day... sigh... I've lost my patience and I'm wanting to get over being angry at font on a screen.

And yes, to make it clear, I'm making comments at ^Jules1983 and ^shebid. I NEVER made it a personal thing when I brought up the issue of redefinition. NEVER. However you both took it personally and saw it as an insult to you both. I apologise for any offense I brought then and I do again. But this time. It is personal. The catty remarks and the sarcastic notes and comments... pathetic. Aimed at me on purpose. Resorting to these methods instead of responding. Be a woman and use your balls.

Oh wait... women don't have balls, there is something for you to nit pick at and skirt the issue.

Do you think I've got some sort of God complex - as I've been accused - because I passionately talk about these things and _know_ I am right? I was one of the original vexel artists, my work and others inspired the need for this word to be coined.

Do you think I do this as a personal attack to you? No... I'm not that petty.
Do you think I do this to be an attention whore? Frankly no, it brings negative light on myself and my work when you resort to petty comments and snides, disregarding anything I bring to your attention.
Do you think I do this for the lulz and for drama? No. Frankly I have better use for my time.

And it is with that, that I'm officially letting it rest from my side. You've won. I'll sit back in my throne, or heavenly cloud while feeding my pvc clad, pistol whipping bitches massage my feet and feed me pealed grapes and watch how wrong you are.

its a shame that your voice wasn't heard. i cant imagine how that must be to see something you help create be used wrongly. hopefully the message will eventually get through.

This is the main reason why I've been so reluctant to delve properly into the dA world. There are lots of AMAZING people here, but when it comes down to it, if my voice isn't getting heard amongst the mass of thousands, or even, if it is being heard and ignored, it's not really the kind of community i'm entirely sure i'm happy spending time in.

I'm pretty disappointed that despite all the effort you put in, you got nowhere. Here I was thinking that communities were supposed to work together?

Wow that was one hell of a journal. Tbh Shar, you shouldn't care. Long as you know you're right it's fine. If people are too narrow minded and pathetic to listen, it's their own fault. You're as they may put it, the older generation of vector/vexel artists and you clearly should've been listened too but some people just can't accept some things, mostly being proven wrong or shown up.
:iconbutch007:
Yeah, I don't know it always seemed pretty clear to me:

Vexels = Vector path derived rasterized pixels and not mathematically derived vector paths.

I wonder if you just have to be more mathematically or technically inclined or something to really see how different the two are. If you could see how each was represented in code the difference would be crystal clear. I don't know the other issue is that when Illustrator incorporated color blending which wouldn't, on the surface, seem like a vector operation that threw some shit in the game. For most stuff I can see where they calculate a blend with vector math, but if you could see a hard line or a very defined pattern under a solid color I would start to wonder whether it's still really all vector.

I really don't know much about vexels or how the came to be but the fact that it came to this sort of argument sucks. Artist have to fight with everyone else because of the kind of work they do. We shouldn't have to fight with each other. I'm sorry your voice wasn't heard. I hate when that happens (and it happens on a regular basis at work as an inhouse graphic designer). Hopefully they will see the light one day. If not, oh well. Nothing you need to worry yourself about. Just breathe and move on and keep doing what you love doing! :)

You're quite right. The definition used on dA is not in keeping with the original definition of the term 'vexel' that Seth Wooley coined.

However, at some point you're going to have to just let it go, because things aren't going to change. $Moonbeam13 isn't going to change the name of a gallery just because 2 people happen to know the person who coined the term and are having issues with the definition of it that has been considered the definition within the deviantART community.

It's obvious you're frustrated by it, but you may as well just let it go because it isn't going to change

You're being hear, but think - you are just one voice in hundreds of vexel artists. It would be far too much trouble and effort for the gallery to be renamed or redefined just because you're frustrated by it, you see? It would cause confusion amongst a lot of people who have come to understand what vexel means to dA and have never even heard of where the original definition came from, and a lot of them probably don't care too much either.
